Happy St. Andrew’s Day: Celebrating Scottish Heritage
Tomorrow marks St. Andrew’s Day, Scotland’s national day celebrated on November 30th in honor of the country’s patron saint. Whether you’re in Edinburgh or experiencing your Scottish heritage from across the world, it’s a wonderful time to celebrate the traditions, history, and spirit of Scotland.
St. Andrew, one of Jesus’s twelve apostles, became Scotland’s patron saint in the Middle Ages. Legend has it that his relics were brought to Scotland in the 8th century, and the distinctive white X-shaped cross on which he was martyred became the foundation of Scotland’s iconic flag, the Saltire. Today, St. Andrew’s Day is celebrated with traditional music, dancing, feasting, and a deep sense of national pride.
For Americans of Scottish descent, maintaining connections to ancestral roots can sometimes feel challenging. That’s why I’m excited to share a discovery that many of you might find meaningful: the Scottish Unicorn Network on Facebook. This new (created in Sep 2025) and very welcoming community brings together Americans and others who share Scottish heritage, creating a space to celebrate traditions, share stories, and connect with others who understand the pull of those Highland roots.
The organizers offer history, humor, links to other Scots and descendants of Scots, and a welcoming atmosphere. For those of us who attend Highland Games, celebrate Scottish holidays, and sing Auld Lang Syne at midnight on the 31st of each year, it’s a breath of fresh air.
Communities like the Scottish Unicorn Network help keep these traditions alive. They remind us that heritage isn’t just about the past—it’s about the connections we maintain and the culture we choose to celebrate, no matter where we call home.
So this St. Andrew’s Day, whether you were born on Scottish soil or carry the blood of Scottish ancestors, take a moment to honor those roots. And if you’re looking for others who share your appreciation for all things Scottish, perhaps it’s time to join the clan at the Scottish Unicorn Network.
